Permits, and What the Surface Looks Like Afterwards

The pipe is rarely the expensive part of a lateral job; reaching it and putting back what was above it usually is. Lawn opens and closes quickly, concrete and asphalt do not, and a public street generally brings a permit, traffic control and a restoration specification the contractor does not write.

What is on top of the fault

The same length of pipe, at the same depth, costs very differently depending on whether it runs under lawn, a paved driveway, a mature tree, a public sidewalk or a street. Lawn is quick to open and quick to close. Concrete and asphalt are neither, and a street usually brings a municipal permit, traffic control and a restoration specification the contractor does not set.

Ask what "restoration" includes

This is where quotes diverge most and homeowners compare least carefully. Backfill and compaction, or just backfill? Topsoil and seed, or bare ground? A concrete patch, or a patch matched to the existing slab? Who returns if the trench settles over the winter, and for how long?

A quote that says "excavate and replace 20 feet" without saying what the surface looks like afterwards is not comparable to one that does, and the gap between them is frequently the entire price difference.

Why trenchless is priced against this

The case for lining or bursting is rarely that the pipe work itself costs less. It is that the surface is opened in two small places rather than along the whole run. Where the run crosses a driveway or a mature planting, that is decisive; under an open lawn it may not be — lining against bursting.

Permits

Work in the public right of way generally needs a municipal permit, and the requirements are set by the municipality rather than the contractor. Ask who is pulling it, whether it is in the quoted price, and how long it typically takes where you live — that answer often determines the start date more than the contractor’s schedule does.
